Dress Yarn for Machine Knitting Slacks and Skirts

The yarn that is popular for machine knitting slacks and skirts is a blend of rayon and wool (sometimes with a little nylon as well).

It is described as a hard-twist dress yarn and it is spun at approx 2250 yards per pound

It was known by a number of names

  • Wool Crepe Deluxe
  • Cravenella
  • Venesian
  • Designer 727
  • Wool Crepe 80/20
  • Velveen

There are very few sources remaining for this yarn

Silk City Fibers
Newton’s Yarn Country
Huntingdon Yarn Mill

A warning … this has been a popular yarn for a very long time. You will find many knitters with cones of this yarn in their stash. Please be aware that it has probably been in their stash for a LONG time. I’ve seen many cones that are brittle and unusable. Nuff said :o)
